Oldsmobile, 98 Regency, 1988, with 170,000 miles. Not sure on the engine size. New car to me. My boyfriend had a transmission put in about 6 months ago, when we got it back it ran excellent. In the last week it has started loosing all power and just shutting down while driving. Sometimes it will jolt or surge a few times letting you know it is going to die soon. The check engine light and temp light come on and then when it finally dies all the other lights come on. It starts back up sometime immediately after pulling over shutting it off. Sometimes you have to sitt for a few minutes. Never more than 10. It especially does it when you drive on the highway. I work 20 miles north of town, the fastest way is to hop on highway, for the last week have had to find the back roads to take so I can average anywhere between 30-50 mph. Sometimes it will shut down every mile if I had been traveling closer to the 50 mph, but once I hit the town roads it usually stays on and does not cut out. The first time it did it to me, I was on the highway and I was going 70 and it cut out, and then I slowed my pace down and it did not matter how slow or fast I was going it cut off every 1.2 miles. A 20 minute drive took me 45 minutes. I thought it might be a few things but was not sure, spark plugs, distributor cap, fuel pump, fuel filters, or altenator. Can someone please help me, I need to get this car back to running right so I can get to work. Thanks, Cara

It sounds like you have a fuel restriction problem. Have the fuel filter changed and see if it helps. If not, have the fuel pump checked, then see if that fixes it. Then go to the fuel injectors. Sounds like you need a good fuel system tuneup. I bet the filter will eliminate the problem.
