2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue 6 cyl Automatic 98,000 miles

Starts fine. After driving for few minutes, the car quits(engine shuts down). Has happened a few times at about 45 mph after letting off the accelerator but before applying the brake to slow down. Car starts back up easily. Runs smoothly, no hesitation, no vibrations, no loud noises. Once the car wouldn't start after being parked for an hour.

Car has new battery.

What could the problem be?

Even with new battery, the battery is not performing at full power, but the mechanic says even though not at full power, it should not be causing the engine to shut off and the car quit while driving along.

The mechanic is right. Bat has nothing to do with the car shutting off. And if it starts right back up, the bat and alt are fine.

Is any check engine lights coming on during the shut offs? If so, then have your computer checked first. I suspect one/more of your sensors or wires are faulty.

I ran into a similar issue on a 2001 impala that wasn't producing any check engine lights. After several days of diagnosis, I found it was the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Your issue could be the same. But DO NOT just start replacing part without confirming they are faulty. Test each component thoroughly first.
