1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue Rack&Pinion Steering

We have been told that we will soon have to replace the rack in our steering. My husband feels it because I am an 'agressive' driver on our poor roads (you haven't seen poor city roads until you've lived here!) Is this something will go because of the age and mileage of the vehicle or because of poor driving? He doesn't want to purchase another vehicle for fear of me wrecking that one!
