So, I have a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 4Tech 2.5L that won't start. Replaced the spark plugs (gap checked) and spark plug wires (technician recommended specs). I know this may already be known, but this car has an IDI (indirect ignition) system in place of a distributor. The engine will crank over, but won't start. I could use some help.

Can you tell me if you are getting spark and fuel to the engine? Is the spark a good hot blue snapping spark? Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Has the check engine light come on?

Let me know.

How would I check fuel pump pressure?

As far as checking for a spark, can I do that by peeling back the insulation on the wire and checking it against any metal component, or specifically against the plugs themselves?

And then as far as the check engine light, it as well as the battery, and temp lights come on everytime I turn the key.

Did the check engine light stay on when it was running?

As far as the checking for spark and fuel, here are the how to's for doing it:

Ok. So those instructions are easy enough to follow. So now I only have one question. Well, two, actually.

1) Where is my fuel pressure test port? I have a Haynes Automotive Repair manual for my model but it doesn't say where the port is.

And 2) Where is my pressure regulator?

EDIT: I don't remember if the check engine light was on or not while the car was still running. I believe so, but I can't be sure.

Both are located on the fuel rail. As far as the check engine light, if it was on, there should be a trouble code stores in the computer. Have it scanned. Most parts stores will do it for free.
