My son's alero sometimes won't start when he try to do it. It has something to do with security. Now he found he can start it by pumping the gas several times and keeping the enigine rpms high. When the idle drops below 1000 the engine dies. Help?

What makes you think it has something to do with security?

My son is at college.
He says the security light comes on and car won't start and then he does some kind of dash reset and it goes off and car starts. This time he did reset twice and car would only start when pumped several times and idle held above 1000. The check engine stayed on. When I wrote original question that was what car was doing. Now two houre later the car starts fine and acts if there is no problem. It will be this way for a day or so or maybe a week.

Ok, tell him to bring it to autozone, and have it scanned for trouble codes, tell him not to take any suggestions from them, just to jot the codes down and bring them back to me for further diagnosis, it doesnt sound like this is serious in terms of repairs or repair costs. But we will need to look up them codes. By the way, to have autozone check the codes is free. And remember do not take any of their suggestions, they dont know what they are talking about, and they just may want to make a few sales, I've already had complaints about this, and we just want to protect you guys o.K
get back asap

Ok, tell him to remove the negative battery cable for about fifteen minutes, lets see if we can get this thing to reset. Make sure it get put on nice and tight clean any corrosion, If not this is a problem with the inside of the security system, it cutting fuel that is why you have to pump it too, it shouldnt even let you do that, if there was nothing wrong, is there a battery light on after he gets it running?
