I have a 2000 alero and sometimes the blinkers go out then work, on and off. I was told it could be a short in the turn signal itself and not the fuse because if it was the fuse it wouldnt go in then out. What could this be?

It could be the switch, but I would check the flasher fuse first, and the flasher fuse can cause an open circuit then a closed circuit, thats how it blinks. So check the fuse first.

I also own a 2000 olds alero. I am dealing with the same issue you are. I recently ran into another problem with this piece of crap of car which took me to the world of the internet. I just happened to hit a site about any recalls on vehicles. So for the heck of it I typed in the alero and BAM! There is so many different kind of recalls on this vehicle it would make your head spin. One being the hazard flasher! Simply put it states that the hazard flasher will go out making the turn signals inoperative. I was fuming since I did have everything possible done to fix that problem to no avail. I contacted GM where they asked me for my vin then after putting me on hold for 15 minutes came back and told me that my vehicle did not apply to that specific recall. I am now challengong that ruling. I have contacted ODI, Office of Defects Investigation and filed a formal complaint against GM. This is a site that I feel u should look at. There are all kinds of recalls and complaints on this year, make and model of car. I hope that u find the solution to your problem but I also wanted to make you aware of the fact that the problem might not be fixable, partly because of the lack of GM taking the time to care for the consumer.

I agree aleroowner78, what I dont understand is, how come gm doesnt know that the signals are directly associated with the hazzards, as they use the same bulb and the flasher fusese is what makes the hazzards blink. Go figure, what I did find out is some alero's if not all, use a multifunction switch, but I am gonna look it up and let you know which one of the two does it have. Hang tight
