Oil or other fluid in coolant system, but no coolant in oil?

My car recently started making a bit of a whirring noise when accelerating at low speeds/first gear. No noise at higher gears or acceleration after that. No noise when revving in neutral. Mechanic originally said the noise is probably a tin shroud vibrating against something when I took it on Monday dropping off our family vehicle for a different issue.

Decided to check fluid levels, and it appears to have something mixing in the coolant. I have no idea how long it has been doing that, no one ever noticed before on oil changes or checks. I took the car back on Tuesday while picking up our family vehicle.

Does not appear to have coolant mixing in oil at all. I do not believe this model has a transmission coolant heat exchanger but I don't think that transmission would look brownish in the coolant anyhow, would it?

The mechanic said it would cost 7 to 8 thousand to replace the engine and is probably not worth it.

I'd like a second opinion, since they didn't really take much apart or do much more than research on some analytics resource is what they told me. Are they probably right?

I know a cracked block could be a cause, they said head gasket is unlikely issue since its only oil in coolant and not the reverse. Other than that, I am no mechanic.

Some more information:
I have owned this vehicle for about 50 thousand miles or so, about 8 years now. I have always given it oil changes at around 3,000 miles, uses high mileage oil. I have also had Oilstop do the recommended transmission fluids when it was due (15 or 30 thousand miles?

The low coolant light has always been on the entire time I have owned the vehicle, but the coolant overflow has always remained about the same where it needs to be, and I periodically check the level between oil changes. Have occasionally added a little to keep it up but is only maybe an inch below the line at worst, like once or twice a year.

The engine has never overheated, and rarely goes over halfway mark on long drives on hot days when I have the A/C on.

Hello JACKINBUICKREGAL,

Some came with the trans cooler, others did not. I am going to send over a picture. See if there are 2 lines on the passenger side of the radiator.

If there is, then the fluid could be transmission fluid mixing with the coolant and the whine you are hearing under acceleration could be the transmission.

Let me know what you find on the radiator.

Thank you,
Brendon

I will look when I pick it back up from the mechanic here in a bit. Would the coolant look like brown/beige if it were transmission fluid though? I will add pictures when I pick it up.

Hello JACKINBUICKREGAL,

Okay. Sounds good.

Usually, you will see it floating on top of the coolant and it would be red, sometimes reddish brown. But I would say it would depend on how bad it is and how long it has been driven like that.

But when you get back send me a couple of photos if you could and let's see what we can find out.

Thank you,
Brendon

Hello JACKINBUICKREGAL,

I just had a thought. Are you running DEXCOOL in the vehicle?

DEXCOOL can degrade and become brown and oily.

Thank you,
Brendon
