Oil was changed 3 weeks ago. Engine light came on and checked the oil. It wasn’t showing any on the dipstick. Put 3 quarts of oil in. Didn’t get 3 miles and light came back on. Got out and oil was pouring out onto road. Local mechanic is saying bad oil pump and an engine coil. What I’ve read indicates other symptoms for bad oil pump. Not a gushing out type scenario that we had. What would an engine coil have to do with this issue.

Hi,

That doesn't sound right. For sure, a coil wouldn't cause an oil leak. Have you checked to see if you can tell approximately where it is coming from? Does it only leak with the engine running or simply when you add to it?

Check the oil filter, oil pressure switch, and drain plug on the oil pan. The drain plug is at the bottom of the oil pan. I attached a pic of the oil filter and oil pressure switch. Check both of these. Also, if you notice it is coming from where the oil filter connects to the engine, there is a good chance by accident they have two o-ring gaskets installed.

Let me know what you find.

I called the repair place this morning again. Now he says the water pump, and tried to say he needs to fix those parts before he can tell if /what has caused the oil to rush out. Said it could be the engine but can’t tell until he gets the other parts fixed. But if it’s the engine block, the car isn’t worth the cost of the fix. So I think his first response was pretty sketchy. To imply my 38 year old son, may have added the oil to the wrong place. Good grief! Told him, No. My son’s been changing oil since he was a teenager. Going to have it towed back home. Probably need to get a different car now. Thank you for your response though! I knew his first response didn’t sound right. I’m really disappointed as that auto repair place is one I’ve used for quite awhile, but never this particular technician. Won’t want to chance it again with them. Thank you again! Saved this ol lady some money by verifying my concerns!

Listen, when you get the car home, let me know. We will fix it together. A water pump will not pour oil out. I'm not sure who is checking it, but I do have my concerns.

Let me know.
