Oil filter has not been changed

Oil filter has not been changed own car for 5 years. I have had oil changes. I don't have any performance problems. I just had oil changed can I get new oil filter without changing oil?

Hi Stevie,

Clearly you need to replace the filter at this point. Good thing you have no issues. To answer your question, you can change just the filter at this point but you are going to lose some oil which means you will need to top it back off. Normally, the filter and housing holds about a quart but I would start with adding a half quart, check it and top it off to the fill line. Then run the engine for a couple minutes and check the oil again just to be sure you are good.

Thank goodness. If I found out that a mechanic was not replacing the filter during the oil change, I would find another one.
