My car had a little over 117,000 miles on it. The day I was taking it in to get an oil change I turn it on and it had 114,800 miles on it. Our mechanic thought I was crazy, but I’m always keeping track of my mileage. Wish I had I picture to prove it.
What’s going on?

This does sound unlikely. The reason is, the mileage is stored in the cluster and is backed up in the PCM. This means that both the cluster and PCM would have to be rolled back. The federal government has made laws that the automakers have to put in fail safes to prevent this.

Did he put an oil change sticker in the window with a mileage for the next oil change? This means he added that mileage to what the odometer said at the time he did the oil change. If you are getting the oil changed every 3,000 miles, then that would make the sticker say 117,000+ miles. Is there a chance you looked at the sticker and just remember it being what the cluster said?

No, I remember when the mileage was almost at 116,666. I thought it would be cool to see 4 sixes in a row, but never actually saw it happen.

I have seen a lot of crazy things but never seen the odometer jump backwards a couple thousand miles. Anything is possible but the odometer is federally regulated to be tamper proof.

I have checked consumer reports and with the national highway traffic safety administration and there are no other reports of this happening on any Toyota product.

I just am not sure how this would happen on its own. The fact that the day you were going in for service is the day it rolled back is even more hard to explain.

Is there any history to this or has it been running fine for a while? When was the last time it was in for service?

No previous history of this. The last time I had the oil changed was at 10,000 miles, so it makes sense that it would only be at 14,000. As with all of our Toyota's, it’s been working great. I guess my aging mind is playing tricks on me. Thank you for researching this out for me.

Haha. I totally understand how you feel. I went to the grocery store with my wife the other day and she asked where the milk was at the check out and I said in the cart and it wasn't there. I was convinced someone took it out (like one of my 6 year boys) because I remembered putting it in there but they were with there mother the whole time.

I was convinced all the way back to the diary section until I found the carton of milk that I set down next to the yogurt so I could pick up 3 of them.

Clearly anything is possible but worse case scenario the mileage only backed up a couple thousand miles. Clearly we don't have proof enough to make a complaint but I would just keep an eye on it. If it does it again, I would contact the dealer to document it and then submit the info to the government website. Odometer accuracy must be maintained and if for some reason there is an issue, they need to correct it ASAP.

Thanks for using 2CarPros.

Thanks for understanding. I found a picture of my mileage that I sent to my husband in August and it was 111,555 so there’s no way it could have been what I thought it was. Thanks for your quick responses and research, I greatly appreciate it.
