I’m having trouble understanding how the flashing check engine procedure goes to get code.

Can you explain it better to me and the pauses and flashes?

Turn the ignition switch from "off" to "run", back and forth, three times within five seconds. Leave it in "run", then that light will start to flash. It's a two-digit code, so you watch for the series of flashes for the first digit, then you'll see there's a longer pause between the blinks. The next digit starts flashing the same way. It's much easier to do than to describe.

If you think you miscounted, on most models you just turn the ignition switch back to "off" one time and back to "run", then the code will flash again. If there is more than one code, after the first one is done, there will be a longer pause, then the next code will flash the same way.

At no time during this procedure turn the switch all the way to crank the engine. Doing so instantly takes it out of test mode and reverts it back to normal operation.

You can do this with an inexpensive code reader, but '95 and older models are all different so a simple code reader is hard to find. Chrysler actually made this procedure much easier to do than any other manufacturer. GM codes flash the same way, but you have to connect two terminals in the diagnostic connector. Ford had the most difficult method that was very frustrating and time-consuming. On '96 and newer Chrysler products, you cycle the ignition switch the same way, but the codes show up in the odometer display.

Once you record the code numbers, you can go here:

to see the definitions, or I can interpret them for you. Let me know if you figure this out. (I have 5 Caravans including a '94).

I put this sad drawing together in hopes it will help. Let me know what you come up with for code numbers.
