Go to start engine and nothing happens. Have recently bought a new battery. What could this be?

Hello,
What happens when you turn the ignition key to "START"? Does the engine crank and not start? Does it sound like a machine gun? Does it just "click" once? Or does it do absolutely nothing at all?
