Bought the SUV drove about 40 miles, shifting fine then it just fell out of gear. engine was still running. would not go into any gear.

Have you checked the basics? For example, is the fluid clean and full? Next, have you noticed any leaks? When shifting the gears, does the indicator on the cluster indicate the gear you are selecting?
