Heard a high pitched noise just before reverse went out

Was stuck in snow on a downward angle and had to back out. After awhile wheels stopped spinning and reverse gear did not engage. Checked fluid level was okay. I have no reverse. Is this something I can fix myself? Need to add that I heard high pitched sound from right front wheel before reverse was lost.

Possible that your reverse gear or clutch has failed. Did you notice if your fluid was black or burnt or maybe some metallic in it?
