Hey guys, I have the vehicle listed above. I did a timing job on it, replaced crank and cam position sensors, VCT solenoids, dropped oil pan and cleaned pick up tube, went to crank it and battery was weak, so I jumped it off, ran amazing! I drove it for about a week but every morning, I’d have to jump it off. Well one morning I woke up and I tried and tried cranking it and it would just crank and not start. Eventually the battery drained, I tried jumping it off and still nothing, I hooked a scanner up to it and it pulled p0607 control module performance. I had another guy come over and hook his Snap-On scanner up and he said my battery didn’t have enough cranking amps, so I went and bought another battery, put it in and still nothing. So, I went to my fuse box under passenger side kick panel, tested the PCM relay, starter relay and both are getting power, I swapped them out with working relays and still nothing. I tested all my fuses with a test light, all light up. When I turn the key to the on position it does a sweep of the gauges and the lights pop on, the chime, it shows my mileage but when I try to crank it, it says check gauges. All it does is click when I try to start it and it almost sounds like it’s going to engage the starter motor, but you can hardly hear it. I’ve tried a jumper wire at my starter relay, and it still does nothing. I can record a video of what it does and upload it if it’ll help. Please help me. I’m at a loss! My truck has been down for at least 6 months, and I’ve been having to drive my ATV to work and back home every day 22-mile round trip and now we are expecting ice and snow, and I just really need some good advice!

Hi,

If you jumped the secondary side of the starter relay and nothing happened, either you have an open between the relay and the starter or the starter is faulty. (Confirm it was pins 30 and 87 were jumped)

On the other hand, the code indicates an internal fault with the PCM. See pic 1 below.

One other thing to try is this. On the starter motor will be a smaller gauge yellow wire with a light blue tracer. That wire only gets power with the key in the start position. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power at that wire. If you have power, replace the starter. If there is no power (even with a jumper), you have an open between the starter relay and the starter's trigger wire (yellow with a light blue tracer). See pic 2

Try this and let me know the results. Also, at this point, I suspect we have a couple of issues happening. If you jumped pins 30 and 87 at the starter relay, the starter should have engaged. I have a feeling the primary side of the relay, controlled by the PCM, isn't actuating the relay. That is only a theory at this point.

Take care,

joe

Hey Mr. Joe,
I had my wife help me, and while she was turning the key to the start position, I tested the starter trigger wire and it receives power when that key turns I made sure I tested the terminal the nut and the connector and all three are getting power when the key turns to the start position. I also tested my main battery lead coming from the battery to the starter. It is also getting power at all times. I don’t know what to do with this truck anymore! It was out of commission for the last five months of 2024 because I had to replace the timing chain, phasers, chain guides, and I ended up listening to a buddy of mine, and he told me that I didn’t need to remove my oil pan and clean my oil pick up tube screen, and because of that two days after I fixed it, the timing chain guides and phase broke again, so that time I replaced it all again, including a camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, VCT solenoids, also dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out, including oil pick up tube and put a new oil pan gasket on and when I tell you, I have never heard my truck run as quiet as it was for that week and a half it was like a brand new truck. So, for that week and a half I was jumping it off with a Napa battery charger and I had it set on 12 V 60-amp boost charge each time. Do you think that that could have damaged something? Also, just for looks, I attached a picture of some of what was in my pick up tube and what was in the bottom of oil pan before I cleaned it up really well.

Hi,

If you have power to the trigger wire at the starter motor, the starter is likely faulty. I would remove it and have it bench tested at an auto parts store. Most will do it free of charge.

As far as the oil pan, wow, that was a mess.

Let me know if you get the starter checked.

Joe

Mr Joe,
After a little research, a few phone calls and your help, I found out it is my starter. The pinion gear does not engage, it just spins inside the starter. I’ve ordered a new one and should have it tomorrow and I will update you guys once I install it.
