Hi. We have a 2002 Nissan Xterra that makes a very loud screeching noise when we turn the ignition, but does go away after 2-4 seconds. When the car is warm is isnt as bad, (starting the car after shopping, etc) but still happens. We just had the car at the mechanics and he changed out the 3 belts and the noise stopped for about 3 days. Now it is back and worse then ever. Please help. It's pretty embarrasing.

Sorry, I wanted to add that I find that if I push the gas pedal durin this noise it makes it go away quicker, but I am not sure if that is all in my head or not. My husband says it is. :)

Hi Nikro,

Thank you for the donation.

You are correct, it is not in the head. In fact keeping the engine speed up really makes the problem goes away faster.

What you are experiencing is a fault with the beltings.

Recheck the beltings tension. I believe they are not correctly adjusted. Check the crankshaft pulley for faults.

Right on the money, KHLow2008.

My dad and I tightened the air conditioning belt just slightly and much to my relief---no squeal.

It's hard to believe that something that simple can make a extremely irritating noise.

Thanks for your prompt response.

Good to hear that you have solved the problem and glad to be of service.

When belts slipps, the squealing noise can be deafening and irritating. If the correct tension is not obtained, the noise would come on and off.

To be sure the tension is correct and without much technical explanation and specifications, spray some water onto the belts and try revving the engine abruptly and if noise is present, it needs a little more adjustment.

Thank you for using 2carpros.

Have a nice day.
