2000 Nissan Xterra Cracked transmission case

I had the shocks (front and back) replaced at the dealership last Monday.
On Wednesday the car started to leak oily stuff from about the center of the car.
Took it to the dealer who said that the transmission case was cracked.
The asked if I had hit anything on the road (which I don't remember doing).
I took it to AAMCOP (a transmission place).
They said that the crack is not from impact but rather wear&tear and materials (I leave in Cleveland with lost of snow and salt).
They indicated that the crack is in an stress area where the transmission mounts on the frame and links to the transfer case and cannot be welded.
My question is whether this damage could have been caused while replacing the shocks or it was just something "waiting to happen".

Ironic - my 2000 Xterra same specs has same issue from this past weekend. Am told that cases are available from Nissan, but have to be shipped overseas with no promiissed time.

What did you do to fix - how expensive?

Nissan dealer wanted 1,600 for a used transmission with more miles than mine.

I took it to AAMCO, the took the transmission apart and put it in a used case.
The transmission was OK so no big rebuild on that.
While everything was apart I had the clutch assembly replaced also.
Bottom line 2,300; most of it labor costs.
