My car will not start sometimes. The service engine light has been on for awhile. The diagnostic code 420 comes up and also a 1448 code. I plan to have further diagnostics run to find the exact problem since the codes are not specific. Is this a common problem with the Sentra GXE? In case my fuel pump is bad I was also wondering if the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank or in the engine?

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
Retarded spark timing
The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings

P1448 -Evaporative Canister Vent Control Valve

Check the EVAP vent control valve

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank
