Noises problem
1996 Nissan Sentra Automatic 28000 miles

I drive a 96 Nissan Sentra. About a month ago it started making this squeaky noise. At first I thought it was the brakes or maybe an oil change. I took it to a repair shop and I was told that the brakes will need replacing in a couple months but nothing else was wrong with it. Well, the reason I don't believe the brakes are the cause of the noise is because the only time the car DOESNT make the noise is when I apply the brakes. It is especially loud when in reverse and when idle. But when I drive or when I brake the car sounds fine. A friend of mine suggested the exhaust manifold was rusted through because its a vibrating squeaky noise towards the front of the vehicle so maybe the exhaust is vibrating against it. But I had the exhaust replaced last year. I really have no idea what this mystery noise may be.

I would first look for a loose heat sheild that surrounds exhaust components. IT is going to be hot, so use a tool to press against them to see if the noise stops.

You may need 2 people to do this, one with their foot on the brake and parking brake engaged, with it is put into forward or reverse in order to get it to act up.

That is assuming it is not brakes.

This very well be brake related as they can make a squeeky noise and stop when pressed on.
