1992 Nissan Sentra speedometer cable?

1992 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

The other day as I pulled out of the gas station I heard a soft bang. A few moments later I looked down to see my speedometer (non-digital) was not working.
It is my recollection from an old VW Type 3 my family had 20 years ago that the speedometer cable feeds directly into the hub of the front wheel ... but maybe this vehicle is different. I have checked Chilton's and Haynes but neither are helpful in locating the speedometer cable. I found one manual that told me to remove the instrument cluster to access the back of the speedometer. Duh. I need to know where the other end goes and, more importantly, how to get it there!
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

It goes to the top of the transmission.
