1993 Nissan Pathfinder burning through starters

1993 Nissan Pathfinder - approx. 198,000 miles

My problem started this past spring when we heard a loud, high-pitched whirring noise after turning the pathfinder off; then it wouldn't start back up again. The battery had just been replaced, so we knew it was probably the starter.

1st "new" starter was a rebuilt starter and the same thing happened within a week or so. The garage thought it was probably a faulty starter since it was a rebuilt one and they replaced it with a brand new one, not rebuilt. That one lasted about two weeks tops, same thing, electrical, high-pitched whirring noise (starter not disengaging).

We took it back in again, the garage worked on it for a week or so and tried everything, the only only thing they could find that "fixed" the problem was routing electrical around the cruise control. A month later, wouldn't start (we don't drive it very often), but the battery isn't dead.

So, four starters later, I am looking for new answers. It is not just faulty starters. Obviously this problem lies with something else. Solenoid? Flywheel?

The garage we had it at is a little local place, we will take it to the dealer this next time, but I want to know if they are feeding me a line of crap or not.

Please give me some suggestions.

According to my schematic, the starting circuit goes through the "Inhibitor relay". If this relay is sticking it will continue to crank the starter regardless of where the key is. It is located on the left front inner fender panel and has these color wires going to it-
Yellow
Black
Black/Yellow
Black/white- 3.0 L only
Gray- 3.0 L only
