I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima SE 3.0 6 cylinders. The problem is when I am driving the car for any reason stops getting into gear in other words it does not go more than 20 miles/hour.I press the gas pedal to pick up speed but no way nothing happens. The car goes only 20 /hour. So I have to turn the car off for about 10 minutes and then comeback to normal function like nothing happened before. Thank you for your help in advance.

If the transmission is not slipping-see below:

Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating, bogging etc. Could be caused by one of the following below:

Possibilities: Inspect and test all the following listed below:
Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it.

Did you figure out what was wrong with your 2001 Maxima? I have the same car and it is doing the exact same thing! I have 142,200 miles on my car. I have taken it to two place now and they cant figure it out. I was told to check for shift solenoid failure. Any luck?
