The transmission doesn't want to work in 1st or 2nd gear. It stalls as soon as I let the clutch out. Reverse however works splendidly. Also I was screwing around and checking that I could shift into all the gears after the car was put back together. I could shift into gears 1-5 perfectly until I tried reverse, then I could only shift into 1-4 + R. So I disassembled it completely again and found a lose check ball in the transmission case that I think belongs to the reverse gate assembly. Also I counted the number of check balls my FSM says should be in the transmission (it was 9 total) and I found that I only have 8 of them. Furthermore, the FSM depicts that there is a check ball that should be on the reverse lever assembly but it is not clear as to where exactly it goes.

Hello,

I have read your statement 3 times and I haven't figured out what your questions is.

You have disassembled and reassembled the transmission twice. And it doesn't function correctly.

I have to assume that it had a problem before you took it apart the first time.

So that's 3 strikes against this transmission.

It's time to let a professional transmission shop take a swing at it.

It sounds like you have no problem pulling it and putting it back in, so you can save yourself some money there.

I was wondering what would make the car work in reverse but also make the car stall when I let off the clutch in 1st gear?

Also do you have any suggestions on how I can find better pictures of the reverse lever assembly because the check ball will no stay where my FSM says it should.

Thanks,

nick

Something is wrong inside the transmission

The Mitchell online repair manuals we have access to are pretty much copies of the FSM, so our pictures are going to be the same as yours.

From your description of the fault, your problem lies with the reverse gear. It is staying engaged in reverse or reverse is engaged when 1st or 2nd is engaged.

Does the vehicle tries to reverse when in neutral?

Either the reverse shifter is not locking into position or the locking balls plunger for the shifter has not been installed correctly resulting in 2 gears being engaged causing the stalling.

Check the above shifter diagrams and see where you have gone wrong.
