Whenever I turn left or right my car makes a load "clicking/ratcheting" noise. It becomes more pronounced when I make a U-turn or hold the wheel all the way over. It used to be one could only hear this on occasion but recently you can hear this more and more, even on the smallest of turns. Has this something to do with my axel? Is this safe to drive? What should I do?

You most likely have a bad cv joint in one or both of your axles. Yes it is safe to drive but wouldnt wait too long to replce. It is fairly economical to replace the whole shaft rather than the joint. You can get the shafts at your local parts store.
