Sounds like a belt rubbing when I depress the clutch?

I am having what sounds like a belt rubbing when I depress the clutch and it quits when I let the clutch out. Do I need to get the clutch replaced? Also, what other work would you have done on a 1998 Nissan Frontier 4x4 with 146k miles on it? I have done routine oil and air filter changes and tire rotations on it. The only work I have done on it though was to change the spark plugs, distributor cap and a rotor at around 120k miles.

Sounds like a mainshaft bearing problem in the trans. As far as service, you should be due for a timing chain and tensioner/guide set. Have seen them go more miles and also less, but if it breaks the guides or tensioner shoe it can plug the oil pick-up causing oil starvation.

Opps! Nope the main shaft stops spinning when the clutch is pressed in, the problem is the throwout bearing, here is a video to help show you how you can tell for sure.

To change the throw out bearing you will need to remove the transmission so you might as well do a clutch at the same time FYI.
