My 2004 Nissan Altima started with a small knocking sound within the first minute or two of starting the car when it turned cold this week, but would stop after the car warmed up. Then last night, it sounded a lot louder and the Oil light came on briefly but then went out after the car warmed up. I added some oil this morning after it sitting cold and started the car, the engine knocking stopped after about 5 seconds during idle, but came back when I started driving.

What do you think it is and should I risk driving 20 miles to a mechanic?

Hi there,

You may be better of not driving as if there is a low oil pressure problem you may do a lot more damage getting it there. I would get it towed or have an on site inspection of the oil pressure at least, if the pressure is still ok and the the knock persists get it towed.
