2003 Nissan Altima Diagnosis

Vehicle stalled and would not start. Wire to the knock sensor had been chewed by rat. Fixed that. Computer message targetted cam sensor. Replaced that. It starts after several cranks now and does not seem to be stalling, but the message still says there is a cam sensor problem. The harness at the firewall that leads to the cam sensor seems to check out ok. I am at a dead end

Since wires had been chewed, there is a possibility the cam angle sensor is broken at some place.

Is the code P0340 or P0345?
Your vehicle is stated as six cylinder, that means it is 3.5 L and it has two cam sensors. Which did you replace?

Sensor A bank 1 was replaced. The code is P0340.
By the way, the wire that was chewed and repaired went to the knock sensor. That code is no longer appearing on the report.
After repairing the wire, the car started with some difficulty. It no longer appears to be stalling so the problem now existing is the time it takes to start. As I said the cam sensor was replaced and the same code still keeps showing up.

When the codes keep showing, it could either be a fault with the sensor, its wiring circuit or the PCM.

Do the following test first.
Check continuity between sensor and PCM, terminal 65 ( Yellow wire).
Check the ground connections ( Black or Black/White)
Check Red/Green wire for battery voltage when ignition switch is turned ON.

Do auto electric shops have any way of testing sensors to see if they are good?
