MY ALTIMA HAS STARTED MAKING A HORRIBLE NOISE FROM THE AREA OF THE TIMING CHAIN, AND RUNNING EXTREMELY ROUGH. I PARKED THE CAR AND I'M WANTING TO KNOW WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM?

Well, you can gain some insight with a compression test. Bad compression will put you in a postion of some teardown. This is an interference engine meaning the pistons and valves may have damaged one another.

If it's a loud rackety type of noise, then it's just the timing chain guides (well-known nuisance on Altimas). Not sure why the rough idle, but check your distributor.
