Transmission problem

I own a 1993 mitsubishi galant which sudenly developed a transmission problem, in that not selecting any gear. The transmission was serviced and now the car will not select third gear. The mechanic who worked on it assured me that it was not a filter problem however the problem still persist. What do you think the problem could be?

If the trans fluid was old or extemely dirty, and you had it serviced (assuming filter and some fliud changed) the new fluid which has strong cleaning detergents might have lifted dirt and varnish throughout the tranny and maybe clogging up the internal parts, if this is the case, I would have the entire tranny flushed out and all new fluid put in.
