When I turn on my air conditioning is makes a loud whinning noise and I'm afraid to keep it on. Could this mean I need a new serpentine belt or another belt. It was working prior to this. It only happens when you turn on the air.

I assume the AC still blows cold, if so the belt is a good place to start. Back in 93 a seperate V belt drove the compressor which is tightened by an adjustable idler pully. If the belt is glazed over and has crackes replace. Lossen the nut in the center of the pully 14mm then lossen the adj. Bolt until belt can be removed. If belt is good and tight then it might be the comp. Clutch bearing or it could be the idler bearing. You could use a long rubber tube placed to your ear then move the other end by the comp. And idler to determine where the noise is comming from. Watch the fingers !

Good luck
