The engine seems to lose power after the vehicle has been warmed. After making 3-4 short stops. Getting out and back in the vehicle after about 10 minutes. The vehicle has a very hard time starting. When it does start you can push the accelerator and it does not rev up. The vehicle is then fine iif it sits for a few hours. Starts right up. Runs like a top with 300000 miles on it. Has no problem driving a long distance. I drive to work 40 miles one way and it runs great. Its when I run a few errands there is a problem. I have tried premium gas and fuel injector cleaners. Also do they make a cover for the alternator for this vehicle. Mechanic says I have an oil leak that gets into the alternator causing it to be replaced. He says I should get a valve cover gasket replacement. I was wondering if there was a shield that covers the alternator.

thanks

I have experienced the problem of oil destroying my alternator on my wifes montero sport. After going through 2 alternators I finally decided to make my own shield to tide me over until I can fix the oil leak which appears to be coming from my camshaft seal. I couldnt find a premaid cover so I made one out of a thin sheet of aluminum I got from a hardware store and I screwed it to the aluminum heat shield on the exaust manifold that is above and behind the alternator. It was kind of a pain to do but it has kept me from having to replace any more alternators.
