1999 Mitsubishi Galant Dashboard illumination

I recently bought a used 1999 Galant. The dash illumination is quite low making it hard to read the instrumentation at night. Is the typical of this make and model or does this suggest a problem specific to the car I bought? Is there a relatively inexpensive fix?

There is a little wheel on the dash to the right that brightens the lights. It is right next to the steering wheel and blends in with the dash so feel around
