I have reason to believe that either the alternator or voltage regulator is malfunctioning. Is there any way to tell which? When I look up the alternator it seems that the voltage regulator is mounted on the outside of the alternator.

The voltage regulator is integrated with the alternator, known as a case-mounted integrated circuit (IC) voltage regulator. follow the steps below to test the regulator and alternator while on vehicle.
