1991 Mitsubishi Galant Alternator problem

My son just bought a used 1991 Mitsubishi Galant GS/GSR. The seller said it needed a new alternator. He had the old one checked and it was bad--so he replaced it. When he disconnects the battery cable, the car dies--had the new alternator tested (just in case) and it is good. Tried different battery and same thing. Whay else could be wrong?

May have a battery drain will need a Volt Ohm Meter.

No, but we've tried other batteries with the same result
