Hey, my name is julian.I have a 97 eclipse gs that has a problem with the steering. When the car is cold its almost impossible to turn the steering without moving the car, also when the car is idling if I turn the steering I constantly the steering right and left the car idle up from about 800r/min to about 1500r/min. Could you give me some advise on this issue, am a young guy just started going to lincoln college.

Hi there, are you trying to turn the steering with the engine off? If so you wont easily as you are fighting the power assist with no hydraulic assist, the steering has a switch that allows the engine revs to increase at idle when the wheel is turned, this is so because if it did not raise the idle speed the engine would stall or at least faultier and power assist would be lost.

Actually the car is on when I does, for example am driving out of a parking spot the wheel is very hard to turn at first. But with the idle reving up, I mean when I for example with one hand on the steering just to say at the 12' o clock postion, the clockwise to 3 then anti clockwise to 9 the vehicle revs up. But when I make a complete lock( turn the wheel till it stops) the idle goes down.

When you are on full lock the power steering pump builds up enough pressure to open a relief valve excess pressure won't blow any seals, with the pressure drop the power steering valve closes and the the signal is lost to keep the idle up, if you feel that the steering is heavy, the belt may need adjusting or you have a tight ball joint or top strut plate, you may need to have these checked out as well.
