My car would start fine with the idle being low then after a long drive it would go higher and goes up when its in park. One time it stalled during stop and go traffic on the freeway and then acted like it was out of gas, the car would shake and was stuck on 20mph. It started up a second time and wouldn't go pass 20 then I turned it off and it wouldn't start again until a couple of times and then ran fine, I also noticed some burning smell and a liquid spill below. Now the idle is still a problem.

Hi g89nguyen,

Thank you for the donation.

Is the Check Engine Light showing?

For Mitsubishi vehicles, sometimes the CEL does not show but codes are stored by the PCM. This being a pre OBD II engine, your local parts store, which provides free scanning, might not be able to help you as their scanners might not be compliant.

If you are technically inclined, you can retrieve the codes yourself and with the codes, it would help in diagnosing the problem.

Let me know what you find and we can proceed from there.

The check engine light is not on. The car sometimes doesn't start up all the way because the idle is too low and I would have to use my key to turn it lose. Then after driving for a while on then stopping it would die out again and I would have to rev the gas to make it go. It also makes a little ticking noise whenever I start my car up.

I just bought the car from a private dealer and his mechanic (whom I don't trust that much) told me the car needs a idle control valve or something. It also smells like burn rubber or gas after a drive.

If it is a fault with the IAC, it would normally produce a stored code. Did you do the test outlined above?

If no codes are stored, cleaning the IAC, throttle body and readjusting the idling speed should solve the problem.
