Three months ago my car engine quit. The mechanic said the oil had not been replaced in some time and had to extensively clean the engine along with other repairs like changing a chain. Total Cost $2400. Now the car has stopped running again. The mechanic now advises I should have him install a low mileage (35,000 mile) engine. Cost for the engine is $700 total cost with labor is $1900. I still owe about 18 payments worth about $6,000. Is it worth to have this work done or should I walk away from the car and allow it to be repossesed? Should the mechanic had recommended changing the engine when he did the initial work? The mechanic said he would inspect the used engined before installing. Please help? Gwen

Hi there,

There would have been signs that the engine was not that sound, and anyway before doing extensive work like that the engine, it should have been assessed first, butt hat is all a bit late now, frankly it is up to you, defaulting on the payments is not a smart thing to do, you are presumably will be in need of a car and with the default you may find it hard to get a loan, you may be better of with the car you have and get it fixed, but in the end it is your decision.
