1999 Mercury Sable engine problems

I got a 99 mercury sable, I was drivin down the freeway and all of a sudden I herd a knocking noise and the car started to lose power. It was not over heating at the time, and the oil level was fine. I left the car for a whille and it was fine, the noise had went away. But the water now smells like fuel a lil bit. And its not starting up with out me pushing on the gas.

Need and have to scan for codes
check MAF sensor
is the car due for tune up?
Oil in the fuel indication of an injector open and leaking fuel
change the oil +filter too
