1999 Mercury Sable 156000 miles

my 1999 mercury sable just suddenly wont pick up past 45 and it just revs up past 5 rpm which thens its starts over heating and smoking. Is that the tranny or what could it be?

Tranny could be slipping hard dogging the engine causing it to overheat or coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber diluting the air/fuel mix due to a blown headgasket, cracked head or block
