1998 Mercury Sable The car seems to stop running on signal

The car seems to stop running on signal stops. I can start it back on but I have to put it back in park before I can start the car again

I dont know where the problem is

Check engine light on?
Get the codes
i would check for vacuum leaks
pcv valve and its vacuum line
check and clean idle air valve

check tranny for any codes

Hi Sam - I have a 95 Sable Wagon that is doing the same thing. But, I've recently come to realize that this only happens when the air conditioner or heat is on. So on good days when neither has to be used the car runs fine. I'm looking for suggestions too.

I would chean or replace the idle valve
