1996 Mercury Sable

After you drive a distance in the car the car just starts jerking for a second and then the more gas you give it the slower it goes. You have to pull over and wait for a while and then start it again and it may or may not do it again the longer you wait the better. What may cause this. I think the alternator is bad but I do not know please help if you can

Is the charging indicator light lit? If it's not on when the car runs OK it's probably not the alt. Check your fuel pressure, and EGR system. When was the last complete tune up? Filters? Plugs and wires?

Reply to your PM: If the check engine light is on go to Autozone and have the code(s) read, get the printout, then post the codes here. They read the codes free! You will have stored codes called freeze frame data, this will tell us even how fast and engine load when the problem occured. It will be needed to evaluate!
