Acceleration problem

Hello I am hoping you can give me a starting point, or hopefully an ending point. I have a 1994 mercury grand marquis, 5.0 automatic with 160k. I was driving and I stepped on the gas to the floor on acceleration which I really never did before with this car. The car went through the gears and was fine. As I came to the next light I stopped and then when I hit the gas pedal again it would not accelerate normally. I can go very very slow but if I hit the gas it will bog and stall unless I come off the gas. It runs perfect in idle and will rev up in neutral fine. I thought it was possibly the fuel pump and I changed it to no avail. Could I have broken something by hitting the pedal or is it just a coincidence it happened at that time. HELP

Hi fordman
under the steering column pull the cover
and on the column look for a clip with a soft very flex most the time silver color wire if you change the location of that clip that will change the indicator
good luck

Fordman Town Cars don't have rack and pinion. They have reciculating ball type steering box, you will need to check the pump and box!
