My heater/air conditioner blows hot/cold air through the defroster and the floor vents, but not through the vents in the dashboard. Is this an expensive problem to fix?

No, hopefully! It sounds like the vacuum supply line has a leak. Find the thin black(usually) or white hose the comes in through the firewall and test it for leaks. If it has auto temp control let me know.

Look for this vacuum reservoir, inspect it for leaks, a vacuum test pump is ideal for this. Check vacuum lines to and from it, if OK, look inside and under the dash, inspect the vacuum motors that operate the door for airflow. something has a vacuum leak.
