2003 Mercury Marquis Check engine light on and casr hesitat

A few weeks ago my car started hesitating when I hit the gas. Now that is getting worse and the check engine light came on a couple of days ago and wont go off. Now the car is starting to sound like it is going to cut off when I am at a red light. I am going to get it checked out this week but wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on what the problem is so when I go to the shop I at least know a little about what is going on. Thanks in advance for your help.

Autozone and other parts store check the codes for free, stop in and have it done, then post the results.

I took the car to advanved auto parts and the code they read was P0316. I was told by the person there it was only the spark plugs.

Short answer is unless you want to test the cam sensor and PCM, Plugs and or the COP(coil on plug) is the place to start, when was your last complete tune up?
