My car has 125, 00 miles. When I compress the brake and try to put the car in gear it won't go in gear. If I shut the car off and set the emergency brake, then turn ignition to first on position it will go into gear. Also brake lights not working. What is the problem?

Sounds to me that your BOO switch is no good, BOO stands for Brake On Off switch, it is located above the pedal up near the pivot, when pedal is depressed the swtich opens, when the pedal is relieved of pressure then the swithc closes. A bad one or improperly adjusted one could cause this.
