We have a 1999 mercury cougar and it will not go forward. It goes in reverse fine, but when you put it into drive it doesn't do anything. It will not even try to move. Before this it took a spell where it would not go in reverse but it would go forward. What could be wrong?

On the driver's door tag there is a production date, if it's 2/1/98 or earlier, there is a bulliten for the forwrd clutch piston needing to be replaced. Here's part of the bulliten.
TSB#98-3-7 Issued on 02/16/1998
Transaxle AX4N intermittent neutral condition, no forward or reverse movement- Vehicles built through 2/1/1998. It's due to the bonded seal on the forward clutch piston intermittently not sealing during a 3-2 downshift.
Remedy: Replace the forward clutch piston with revised part(F8DZ-&A262-AB).
