Why is the spec size of the front tyres larger than the back tyres, what happens if I make them the same?

Original Equipment Sizes for 1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK230
Original Equipment Front Size 1: 205/55-16
Original Equipment Rear Size 1: 225/50-16
width / side wall height - rim size
Front Optional 17" 225/45-17
Rear Optional 17" 245/40-17
Front Optional 18" 225/40-18
Rear Optional 18" 255/35-18
The rear tires are wider(225) but have a shorter(50) side wall. I recommend staying with the original size that it came with. Look at the sidewall to see the exact match for yours.
