The key got stuck in the ignition this morning. We were finally able to start the car, but we cannot get the car into the 0 position. One thing we noticed was that wiggling the gear shifter seemed to help us (finally) get the key out of the ignition.

Is there a sensor in the shifter that might have caused this? Could it be an ignition switch?

There are no sensors in the shift assembly that could cause this. However this sounds like your ignition switch is begining to fail. I would say that the ignition switch is the direction to go on this one.
