Mercedes Benz air conditioning issue

I have a 1992 300D. When the a/c works it cools the car beautifully. However after driving for a short or long distance it seems like the compressor just quits. If I turn off the ignition and restart the car the a/c comes back on. Any thoughts please?
Thank you very much.

Is it hard to change a cam sensor on your own?
Oh ya, in a 96 taurus wagon.

Check the evaporator for a temp sensor, sounds like the core is icing up.

Additional info, If you have manifold gauge set take readings and post here! The reason is the sensor shuts it down, we aren't talking about a block of ice, only mild icing. Could be other issues too, need readings if you can.I will look into it further in the am!

The air temp sensor is in the dash, its about the size of a quater, with 3 or 4 slashes in it, around radio or light switch area, put a small peice of tissue over slots with air on, if tissue sticks there its working (no thick paper, kleenex ) cycling ign switch resets system you have a prob and it could be 6 or 7 different things
