2000 Other Mercedes Benz Models Car wownt start Says its in

Hello I have a Mercedes Benz ML 430 When I went to start the car it said the car was in (D)position But the shift Knob was in parking (P) But the car started and I was able to switch it into (N) But the car Shut off and I was able to put the shift knob back in to (P) I tried to start the car again it stile said that it is in the (D) position and would not start? I tried disconnecting the battery but that did not work.

Are you saying it wont crank? How do you know it says its in drive

when you say it started did it die out when put in drive or did it start stalling out when you put it in neutral?

It wont crank and how I know its in drive is because on Mercedes cars they have a little screen under the gages that tells the driver what gear there in. When I started the car I tried to switch it into reverse so I could back up but the screen said that I was in drive I thought it was a error so I turned off the car and could not start it back up. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Does it feel loose at the shifter or does it feel like it normally does.

Try having someone rock and shake the car while trying to shift it to different gears.

It feels normally at the shifter and I found out how to move the shifter but it stille says the car is in drive.

When the shifter is put in reverse does the light say R?

Could ne a bad trans control unit. Did anyone spill anything in the shifter. Or maybe the shifter rod fell off. When it says its in drive can you roll the car.

I can only switch it into any gear because theres a little whole that I can put something in and switch gears. But it only rolls in neutral. I checked the shifter cable under the car it looks like its ok. Maybe something is wrong by the shifter?

Scan vehicles' EGS gear transmission box for dtc codes. It might need only a reset. Let me ask, did u notice any usual surge when shifting gears?

We did not notice anything it was working normally like it always was. Also we took it to a shop a wile ago for a different reason though and the mechanics said that they notices something with switching the gears they said it got stuck a little sometimes. Could that be why?
